Homeopathy for Arthritis and Rheumatic pain – A real solution

Your back, your joints hurt, creak, when you get up in the morning, the pain may even wake you up during the night. Walking is difficult, you tire easily and so on. Anybody suffering from any of these knows only too well what I am talking about. Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid-arthritis, fibromyalgia, whatever it is called, the bottom line is you have mobility issues. You may be dependent on anti-inflammatories, steroids or having to take pain killers just to function. Your condition is wearing you down also mentally and emotionally, not just physically.

Maybe you had an injury that takes time to heal, and you never have been well since. You feel invaded by all the pain and discomfort. The pain may temporarily be relieved by anti-inflammatory medications, and or pain killers, but is there any lasting curative action?

You may even have tried various diet methods, exercises at times. Which helped but you are still in discomfort. What if you find it difficult to stick to such and such a diet, or exercises at times? Although such lifetime changes can make a big difference in being able to function or not. Actually, moving, stretching, exercising whatever level you can, is essential. But what if you still need regular medication, suffer side effects and do not want to depend entirely on those medications? What then?

Well, I am going to suggest to give homeopathy a try. Obviously, since that is my profession and also because my own journey towards homeopathy begun just like that, I gave it a try, all those years ago, and I am at it ever since.

So, what is Homeopathy? – In a nutshell, it is a form of complementary medicine that helps people naturally, with remedies that come from nature and work in line with the law of nature (the Principal of Similars). By using minimum doses which are absolutely safe. It is not a treatment or remedy for the disease itself, but a method that actually activates re-enforces the body’s own defense responses. The law of similars suggests that a minute/nano dose of a substance will heal whatever presenting set of symptoms this substance causes in a large dose.

Is Homeopathy a quick solution for Arthritis?

In acute conditions, and in the case of young children it can indeed be, but not so much in chronic inflammations, or any other chronic condition. Although the correct remedy can quickly bring relief, for lasting effects, patience is required. The aim is to build up your health, step by step. The homeopathic healing is a process, an individualized process. Nevertheless, there are certain common pointers for a remedy selection and here are few for your consideration.

Let’s take Arnica, my no1 ‘Desert Island’ remedy. The painful area is so sensitive you don’t even want anyone approaching, let alone to touch it. Even your bed feels too hard. Of course, Arnica is a major injury and trauma remedy and is the first one to think of when we have over exerted ourselves. But I also found Arnica time and time again invaluable help in chronic bruised type of joint pains.

You would choose Bryonia if you have tearing stitching pain, maybe swollen joints. Any movement of the joint causes pain and you are better by keeping still. In fact, you would rather be left alone. You are feeling better from hard pressure, lying on the affected area.

When you have pain, and swelling in your joints that is worse from heat even the heat of bed, and better from cold and cold applications you most probably will be helped by taking Ledum.

When a rheumatic pain feels like the joint being pulled out, the worst position for effected limb is to ‘hang down’ while slow walking in fresh air is preferred, then you are looking towards Pulsatilla. If in addition there is a weepy disposition, needing sympathy, reassurance than almost certainly this remedy will come to the rescue.

In Rhus Tox we have another major remedy for inflammation in the joints. Initial movement is difficult, but once limbered up, movement is easier and there is less pain. As movement continues though, the inflammation, stiffness and pain sets in again. These are key note symptoms pointing to Rhus tox. Pain, stiffness is worse from cold, damp weather and is always better from warmth.

When there is lameness and weakness in the effected limb(s) even when not moving. Rising from bed or chair is really difficult, then we are looking at Ruta. There is so much weakness that walking is impeded. The ability to hold or grip is impaired if the hands and wrists are affected. Tendons feel contracted with aching bruised feelings in the bones.

Made to measure treatments

Of course, in the homeopathic Materia Medica we find many other remedies that can help with arthritic rheumatic pain, depending on all the other symptoms, modalities a person may present. Everyone suffers in an individual way and homeopathy is a ‘made to measure’ method to your specific state. And to make it to measure is the job is your homeopathic practitioner.

As a postscript, I would like to mention two essential alimentary supplements most important in chronic inflammatory conditions: Vitamin D that is vital in fighting inflammation in the skeletal joints, and magnesium.
‘It is magnesium that modulates cellular events involved in inflammation’ (Dr Brian Garrett) Magnesium is also essential in metabolizing vitamin D. This means you may be taking vitamin D supplement but will not have any, or the full benefit if you are deficient in magnesium. Magnesium and vitamin D act synergistically so you will need both to fight inflammation.
