Most frequently asked questions about homeopathy

What is homeopathy?

The word homeopathy is the composite of two Greek words, homoios, that means similar and pathos, meaning suffering.

Homeopathy therefore means similar cures similar, or like cures like.

Illness occurs when the organism is out of balance. A homeopathic remedy acts simply as a catalyst that stimulates the body’s own defence mechanism to restore balance and promote wellness.

In other words the homeopathically prepared substance ‘informs’ the organism in a format it can understand.

A homeopathically prepared substance, sometimes referred to as nano-dose, is and can be made of any variety of plant, animal or mineral substances. The remedies are made through a process of serial dilutions, where the original substance is diluted in water and it is energized by shaking each dilution. This process is done repeatedly, sometimes hundreds or thousands of times, resulting in a highly diluted and energetically potent remedy. To read more go here.

How safe are the homeopathic remedies?

Since the remedies are so highly diluted, they do not contain significant amounts of the original substance from which they are made. Therefore, they do not have the toxic effects associated with many conventional medications or other substances. They are, however, powerful energetic stimuli and must be used with discretion. Sometimes, as part of the curative process, a person may experience a temporary intensification of symptoms. Homeopathic remedies are safe enough in pregnancy, to the newborn as well as the elderly.

What kind of conditions can be treated with homeopathy?

Homeopathy is applicable to a broad range of maladies including acute inflammations, systemic imbalances, chronic degenerative diseases and mental/emotional disturbances. By its very nature, homeopathic treatment is not specific to a particular illness, but is directed at the underlying state of the person suffering from that illness. By addressing this state, the appropriately chosen remedy effectively addresses the illness.

Can homeopathic remedies be taken along with conventional medications?

Yes. Many people who seek out homeopathic care are already taking conventional medication in the hope of reducing or eliminating the medication. With the proper remedy and treatment plan, this often may be possible.

Patients should be aware that their taking of medications, prescribed by their GP, is a matter of consultation between the patient and their GP. I will under no circumstances seek to instruct on this matter and whilst advice may be given in general terms, the varying of the medication prescribed by a Doctor should only be in consultation of that Doctor.

What happens during the homeopathic the consultation?

The first consultation
During a comprehensive first consultation I will essentially listen to your concerns. While taking the case together we go into all the different aspects of your state of health, personality and life style. Every bit of information is relevant, the description of your complaint, emotional reactions, dreams and physical sensations are all equally important, as well as how you carry yourself and how you react to stress.

A homeopath often works like a detective, searching out information, asking questions, trying to find out where in the body the flow of energy has been blocked or hindered and then trying to piece together the results.  I might ask you to repeat yourself several times in order to understand what you are saying on several different levels. The better I understand your nature, the easier it will be to find the best possible treatment for you.

Follow Up consultations
Follow up consultations are an essential part of the homoeopathic treatment process. During the follow up consultations spaced out according to your needs, two weekly, monthly, sometimes six weeks apart, I assess your reaction and progress to the given treatment and determine what additional methods or remedies you might require.

The number of times you need follow up consultations will depend on your condition and or how quickly you respond to the prescribed treatment. For minor complaints you may notice improvement within days or a week, then you might only need one follow up visit. A progressive treatment will take longer. Long standing conditions may only improve gradually. However, even after the first prescription, people generally experience a sense of increased well being.

Why not treat myself with over the counter homeopathic remedies?

Buying homeopathic remedies over the counter for the treatment of acute conditions and in emergencies can be of great help. However it is next to impossible to understand one’s own deepest energetic imbalance. We seem to be quite blind to our own states. Even we, professional homeopaths, need to see another practitioner for our own treatment. In addition, we have been trained to learn about, and work with, literally thousands of remedies and specific remedy relations in varying strengths. The complexities of this specialist knowledge is not available as general information.
